There\u2019s lots of cases where people have damaged other people\u2019s property and promised to make good on the damages never to be heard from again. These are:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ecc773b elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ecc773b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Declarations Page<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-945eb24 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"945eb24\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This is normally the first page (or first few pages) of your insurance policy. It contains a summary of your coverage including insurance limits, deductibles, special conditions, and warranties<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f9c7970 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"f9c7970\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Warranties, Conditions, and Subject<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1d3854e elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1d3854e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>All of these basically mean a promise that you\u2019ve made to the insurance company that a certain condition does or does not exist. Common warranties are that a requirement than only a specified person or person will be running the vessel or that the vessel will only operate for a certain period of time. Sometimes warranties can be confusing as warranties in consumer goods is a promise that somebody else is making to you. In an insurance policy it is a promise you are making to the insurance company. This is one of the most important parts of your policies. If you see the word warranty on your policy make sure you pay attention and understand and agree with it.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ebfd301 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"ebfd301\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Trading Limit or Trading Warranty<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ae5dd6b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ae5dd6b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Normally listed on the declarations page, this is the area in which your vessel is allowed to operate in. It is very important you make sure that yours is sufficient, especially if you do multiple fisheries such as tuna which can put you outside of traditional trading limits.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d55f632 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d55f632\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Material Fact<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-f14d031 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"f14d031\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>A material fact is something that, if the insurance company had known it before putting insurance in place they either would not have insured the vessel of they would have charged a higher premium. Material facts include things such as a skipper having a bad loss history or a pre-existing problem with the vessel that could result in a loss. It is your responsibility as a vessel owner to make sure that the underwriter understands any material fact that puts your vessel at risk that you know or ought to know about. This includes changes that happen after the policy is in place or after the application has been submitted. Different gear types or operating areas, starting a new fishery, a new skipper, or a longer operating season can all be considered material facts. It is very important to understand that the insurance company does not have to ask about if a material fact exists. It is your responsibility as an owner to let the insurance company know if there is something you feel is different than the application asks or if there is something that is missed.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-36a3fe2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"36a3fe2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Wordings<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a9d254d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"a9d254d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The wordings are the actual contract of insurance between you as the vessel owner and the insurance company. They outline everything that is and is not covered as well as conditions for claims, payment, and your duties under the contract. Often there are multiple segments to the wording as different insurers add on additional conditions to modify, extend, or limit coverage. The wordings that apply to your policy should be listed on your declarations page and you should ensure that you go through them so that you understand what you\u2019re paying for.<\/p><p><strong>It\u2019s important to know and understand these terms because they change the coverage on your policy. If you have a warranty saying that only Joe Blow runs your boat and there\u2019s an accident while John Smith is skippering there\u2019s probably no coverage.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-50365cb elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"50365cb\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-top-column elementor-element elementor-element-e1813cc\" data-id=\"e1813cc\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-24e4f12 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"24e4f12\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Breaking Down Common Insurance Policy Wordings<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-inner-section elementor-element elementor-element-560efb2 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"560efb2\" data-element_type=\"section\" data-e-type=\"section\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-container elementor-column-gap-default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-100 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-0fdfeaf\" data-id=\"0fdfeaf\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-628f807 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"628f807\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\">Although what is covered under a policy can be a bit different between companies most insurers in BC use the \u201cCanadian Hulls (Pacific) Clauses 2005\u201d as the base form for their coverage. Each company will make their own changes to this wording to add and subtract coverage from the standard through additional conditions. The coverages I\u2019m discussing are what\u2019s included in the standard base form and might be different from what your particular insurance company offers.<\/p><p>An un-edited \u201cCanadian Hulls (Pacific) Clauses 2005\u201d policy wording will cover your vessel for\u00a0<b>\u201closs of or damage to the vessel directly caused by\u201d:<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-446b4e4 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"446b4e4\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Fire<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7fec359 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7fec359\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Damage due to accidental fire is covered.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8682e15 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"8682e15\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Impact<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2e51899 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2e51899\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Damage due to accidental impacts are covered, whether they are with a submerged object or another vessel.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71ede45 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"71ede45\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">\"Accidents in loading, discharging, or shifting cargo or fuel\"<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8f232fb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8f232fb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This is very important on a fishing vessel as you load your vessel at sea and your vessel can be damaged in the loading or unloading process.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5bd5f8d elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"5bd5f8d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">\"\u2026breakage of shafts, or any latent defect in the machinery or hull\u201d<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-efc8709 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"efc8709\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>If your tail shaft snapped the shaft itself would not be covered but the cost to repair the damage that broken shaft caused (to your rudder, prop, transmission, bearings, etc.) would be covered.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4f9256e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"4f9256e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">\u201cNegligence of Master, Charterers other than an Assured, Officers, Crew or Pilots\u201d<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-bfc447b elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"bfc447b\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Negligence of Master and Crew is one of the most common claims that happens. Traditionally it is grounding of the vessel or impact of some form.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a4ebe42 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a4ebe42\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">\u201cNegligence of repairers provided such repairers are not Assured(s)\u201d<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8af0bbb elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8af0bbb\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This clause provides coverage for damage that results from a repairer improperly installing a part or performing a service (like a valve set). It does not cover the work performed but it does cover the resulting damage. A good example of this is if you direct a repairer to install a new stuffing box and they do it improperly, causing damage to your shaft and transmission. Your shaft and transmission would be covered as resulting damage but the cost to repair or replace the stuffing box would not be. It is important to note that repairs and services you do to your own vessel yourself are not covered.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-85a68b6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"85a68b6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">\"Contact with any land conveyance, dock, or harbour equipment or installation\u201d<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-8d6d117 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"8d6d117\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>This is pretty self-explanatory. We\u2019ve all done it \u2013 don\u2019t lie to yourself and pretend you haven\u2019t. There\u2019re a lot of mysteriously damaged docks and pilings out there. Usually following a comment of &#8220;ah, somebody hit that before me anyway\u201d as you sheepishly depart the dock.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-9a237a6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"9a237a6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-medium\">Damage due to heavy weather (including contact with floating ice)<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4adae18 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4adae18\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Again fairly self-explanatory. A skim of ice in an inlet can cause a tremendous amount of damage to a wood or aluminum boat very quickly and everyone who has fished has experienced heavy weather at some point.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-a3d67c0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"a3d67c0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">read your policy<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-66e520c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"66e520c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\">Most likely your policy will have additional wording and conditions added to it that will add or remove coverage from the basic wording. It is important to understand your specific policy so that you know how your insurance will respond if you have an incident.<\/p><p class=\"\">Fishermen work hard to earn their money.
