This means that the value your boat is insured for is not necessarily the amount you\u2019ll get if something were to happen \u2013 and there\u2019s no way to know exactly how much your value will be depreciated until after a loss happens.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-column elementor-col-50 elementor-inner-column elementor-element elementor-element-edd1bd8\" data-id=\"edd1bd8\" data-element_type=\"column\" data-e-type=\"column\">\n\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-wrap elementor-element-populated\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-b228295 elementor-widget elementor-widget-image\" data-id=\"b228295\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"image.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figure class=\"wp-caption\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nesika.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/half-price.jpg?fit=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1\" class=\"attachment-full size-full wp-image-1574\" alt=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nesika.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/half-price.jpg?w=300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/nesika.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/08\/half-price.jpg?resize=200%2C150&amp;ssl=1 200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption class=\"widget-image-caption wp-caption-text\">Cheaper insurance can mean less coverage than you expected<\/figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-caccc74 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"caccc74\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>With an Actual Cash Value policy you might end up paying several thousand dollars to repair depreciated parts after a partial loss or even tens of thousands of dollars to replace your boat in a total loss to make up the shortfall.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-da0ba9e elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"da0ba9e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">How Actual Cash Value is Calculated<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-7392d8a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"7392d8a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\">As an example, take a boat that is 15 years old which would sell brand-new for $300,000. The insurance company determines that the \u2018expected life\u2019 of this type of boat would be 20 years. If that 15 year old boat had a total loss the insurance company would calculate the boat was worth by using the formula:<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fa4d2d5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"fa4d2d5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><strong>Actual Cash Value = Replacement Cost * (expected life \u2013 current life) \/ expected life<\/strong><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-1a7e5c8 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"1a7e5c8\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\">For this case the Actual Cash Value would be\u00a0<strong>$300,000 * (20 \u2013 15) \/ 20<\/strong>\u00a0or\u00a0<strong>$75,000<\/strong>. Even if an identical vessel were selling for far more than this amount $75,000 is the most that the insurance company would pay.<\/p><p class=\"\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">This is fine if you understand the risk and you\u2019re fine with having to pay more than just your deductible for repairs or replacement in exchange for the lower premium<\/span> \u2013 but in the long run it\u2019s often more cost-effective to just get an Agreed Value policy and pay the extra premium to avoid the uncertainty.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e62b6a0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e62b6a0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-large\">Agreed Value Insurance Policies<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-71e9b7c elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"71e9b7c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\">Agreed Value policies are more expensive than Actual Cash Value policies in exchange for better protection for your investment. For this type of policy the value of the boat is \u2018agreed\u2019 upon between you and the underwriter and this value is the amount you will receive if you have a total loss. Normally the value that is \u2018agreed\u2019 will be your purchase price or the market value on your most recent marine survey.<\/p><p class=\"\">Since your survey is the basis on which the insurer decides how much your boat is worth it is extremely important to make sure it is up to date and done by a qualified and accredited surveyor.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e420ac0 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e420ac0\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">No Deductions<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-2d06fda elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"2d06fda\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Agreed Value policies offer peace of mind because the limit that is on your policy is the amount that you are insured for after a loss.<\/p><p>Parts are replaced new-for-old without depreciation so the only amount you pay is your deductible. Some items which are more prone to wear-and-tear (such as canvas and sails) may be subject to depreciation \u2013 but if this is the case it will be clearly spelled out in your contract.<\/p><p>Some insurers will offer Agreed Value policies for newer boats and convert the insurance to an Actual Cash Value basis after the boat hits a certain age. <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">It is important to speak with your broker to ensure your Agreed Value policy will stay Agreed Value as your vessel ages.<\/span><\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-d636748 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"d636748\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-large\">Replacement Cost Insurance Policies<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-74137d9 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"74137d9\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>Replacement Cost policies are only available for new boats (normally 3 years and under) and offer the highest amount of protection. Under a replacement cost policy if your boat is a total loss the insurance company will replace your boat with a boat of the same (or similar) make and model even if the cost to do so is greater than the amount you are insured for.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-12155d2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"12155d2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">The best of the best<\/h3>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-19ea577 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"19ea577\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\">So, if you bought your boat for $70,000 last year but now the only similar boats on the market are going to $90,000 your insurer will purchase the $90,000 boat as a replacement for your $70,000 boat. If you choose not to replace your boat and go with a cash settlement the insurer will give you the amount of insurance on your policy (in this case $70,000).<\/p><p class=\"\">The exact definition of replacement cost can vary from insurer to insurer. Some require that you are the first owner of the boat and others that you insure to the full invoice amount. Others will replace your boat with a brand new model year. If you can get replacement cost insurance on your boat it\u2019s best to check with your broker to make sure you know exactly what happens if you have a loss.<\/p><p>\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-e7f4ae5 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"e7f4ae5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">So what type of policy should I get?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-93a038d elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"93a038d\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"\">We always recommend that you at the minimum get an <strong>Agreed Value policy<\/strong> if you are eligible for one. This ensures there are no surprises or reductions in coverage if you have a claim.<\/p><p class=\"\">If you\u2019re more concerned about cost than coverage an Actual Cash Value policy might be for you \u2013 just understand that the lower price means lower coverage and don\u2019t be surprised if you\u2019re paying out more than just your deductible after a loss.<\/p><p class=\"\">If you have any
